I have owned stocks where the directors own a significant part of the company and they subsequently run the company like their play thing - spending money on every "great" idea. Also the converse where the directors control the company and it is well run and in the best interest of all shareholders. What I don't like to see is where the directors harp on about the company being undervalued by the market but then not prepared to back it up with some purchases.
