The announcement that Land Surveys is driving around Australia collecting data that no one has asked for is ridiculous. They include the much used graph showing all the construction projects coming on line over the next 5 years, and imply that Land Surveys are going to just start driving around scanning the routes of all these proposed roads/railways. But who is going to buy this data? If I was a consultancy designing a new road, I would want up to date data that has integrity and is fit for purpose, not off the shelf point clouds that may or may not be reliable. And let’s face it, if you are building a multi billions dollar project, you are going to want good data - not just a generic point cloud. What if there are errors in the data? Where is the recourse? Of course they will have a disclaimer saying they cannot guarantee the quality of the data - so who would want to buy it?
