In the current environment, the important things are a) a buyer for your gas and b) the cost of getting it out of the ground and to the buyer. If successful, the Californian and Perth basin plays have both items favourably covered. They have shown strong flows in the past and modern 3D surveys will or have provided a much better picture of the likely targets. The US has had both eyes on unconventional oil and gas which is why I think they have missed (or dismissed) the conventional gas in historic precincts right under their noses.
