why not spell it out? how many people knew that the mine closed before 1971 and that up until 1971 gold was fixed at $35 per troy ounce.

so let's assume that is the case: the mine ceased while gold was $35/ oz and had been $35/oz the whole time of gold mining.
That is a much more compelling story to tell a reader of today's announcement than what Simon wrote, which was something like "when gold was at a much lower price than today's price."
It's 1/37th of today's price.
