The directors recommended the deal because it was a fantastic deal. I am a long term holder and wasn't totally wedded to the sale but recognised the great price and the directors were obliged to recommend the deal. It sets a nasty precedent knocking this on the head. Plenty of super funds hold this stock and stood to make big gains.
I am not at all convinced this is against the national interest in allowing the sale. It could also be said that global capital will be very wary of such investments in the future. i.e. stump up capital, build a business and then be told you can't get your capital out at a fair price. This is a political decision that flies totally in the face of encouraging future investment by foreign capital. Or, fact, by local capital. I liken it to building my own house and then to be told who I am allowed to sell it to.
Nobody heard of APA before yesterday, now the great unwashed think it belongs to them. Well, in future, maybe they can stump up their own capital.
