OMH reported that its Sarawak ferroalloy plant in Malaysia produced 58,121 mt of ferrosilicon and sold 61,179 mt and produced 55,626 mt of manganese alloys and sold 57,097 mt in the third quarter of 2018. In the second quarter of 2018, the plant produced 52,171 mt of ferrosilicon and sold 44,766 mt while producing 61,229 mt of manganese alloys and selling 53,782 mt.
The facility had 16 furnaces in operation, nine furnaces making standard-grade ferrosilicon, one producing refined ferrosilicon and six producing manganese alloys. The plant has a design capacity of 200,000-210,000 mtpy of ferrosilicon and 250,000-300,000 mt of manganese alloys.
The increased in ferrosilicon was attributed to the startup of its last ferrosilicon furnace on June, 1, 2018.
Production of manganese alloys decreased by 9% mainly due to the development and production of higher grades of manganese alloys; while selling for more they also used more power. Sarawak now produces low-carbon silicomanganese.
The ferrosilicon furnaces achieved an average daily production of about 64 mtpd per furnace, well above their design capacity of 55 mptd.
The silicomanganese and high-carbon ferromanganese furnaces also outperformed their design capacity of 100 mtpd of silicomanganese and 150 mtpd of high-carbon ferromanganese with an average daily production of 102 mtpd and 152 mtpd, respectively in the third quarter.
