I'd refer to this behavior as squashing competition and maintaining a competitive advantage, of course they wouldn't want to lay it bare considering they are "subsidizing" poor performing stores to maintain the status quo.
WOW and WES do it although they have also spun out or sold a great deal of their property whereas I've heard Gerry talking about time spans of 100 years and the competitive advantage of holding property permanently.
Chances are when he croaks some old taboos will be broken, supply chain and customer service will improve and property will be spun off, great for short term boost and a chance to sell out when the "analfists" start recommending it as a buy IMO.
