Thanks Bull, you reasons for buying in when you did are pretty much the same as mine. I think it is confusing for everyone trying to get their heads around intermittent energy supply and battery storage, so don't feel alone there.

I found this link which attempts to explain in simple terms how many homes 1 MW of solar power will service.

So going by that, Garden Island will need a lot more.

It has been thirty years since I got out of the navy, HMAS Stirling was fairly new but even then they were talking about how important the base would become in the future.

I remember whenever the ship I served on pulled into port, the first thing they did after tying up was to connect to shore power and freshwater. Obviously they did not want to burn fuel for power or to deplete the freshwater held on board.

The ship I served on was an aircraft carrier, so it's power and water demands were about the same as a small town.

HMAS Stirling is Australia's biggest navy base. The Indian Ocean separates us from most of the world's hotspots, so having a base there is vitally important.

In peacetime, the base receives many visits from ship's from our own navy as well as many from other countries.

One can only imagine by how much that would increase in war time.

One thing I can remember from my time in the navy, was that it usually had (or could access if needed) the resources required for just about any situation.

I would think the forward planning for HMAS Stirling would include much more capacity to be self sufficient for both power and fresh water. I don't think we are going to have a war anytime soon but I would be surprised if the Government wasn't planning for that contingency should it occur.

For these reasons, I see that the Garden Island Microgrid could well be the project that sets CCE on it's way to being a major contributor to ADF infrastructure.
