A YAGOONA company has led the world to "the end of the rainbow" in animal stem cell technology.
MediVet's adipose (fat) stem cell treatment has revolutionised international veterinary practice and opened the door to new treatments for human illnesses such as Alzheimer's.
"We use the stem cells and other regenerative cells present in adipose tissue, meaning there is none of the controversy associated with embryonic stem cells," MediVet executive Garry Andrews said.
MediVet, formed in Bankstown three and a half years ago, has recently turned its focus back to Australia after pioneering veterinary breakthroughs in the US and throughout the world.
It has created world-first technology that allows vets to conduct stem cell procedures in their clinics, thanks to a stem cell bank opened recently in Sydney.
"We send vets a special jar for transport, they extract fat from an animal, send it back to us, we process it and send them the stem cell samples," Mr Andrews said.
The treatment has effectively managed problems such as animal arthritis.
"We've treated family pets, zoo animals, racehorses and camels for sheikhs," Mr Andrews said.
"This is the end of the rainbow (in) medical treatments."
About 50 Australian vet clinics are in MediVet's program and Mr Andrews is hopeful of 100 more joining by the end of the year.
"It might sound corny but we're proud of being from Australia and proud to be from Yagoona," Mr Andrews said....... Cheers V
