And just how is Cabcharge a monopoly? There is no restriction under the Passenger Transport Act to starting an accredited taxi network - provided all the requirements are fulfilled anyone can do this - the most recent examples being Lime Taxis and GM Cabs. Last I saw, all taxis accept all credit cards and debit cards and people may elect to pay with cash. There is a lot of bitterness toward Cabcharge because people in the same position chose not to be a part of it - advanced thinking for the mum and dad taxi-plate owner-operators (the good old days). Remember "Taxi Credit"? Yes, that was far bigger than Cabcharge in the mid 1980's but collapsed under bad decision-making. We have seen what dairy deregulation has done - lined the pockets of Coles and Woolworths and the expense of communities and families. Let's not make the same mistake in the taxi industry - what is to stop the major networks (once licence values are wiped out) from charging "franchise fees" to bailee drivers and operators? In this situation, you will see a massive wealth transfer from small plate owners to a concentrate of massive corporations - but it won't be Cabcharge!
