News clip Below ----------------------------------------------------- Politicians like to refer to rural and regional centres when talking about "the bus" - it just rolls off their tongues - but we never quite know which is which and why.
We were also confused on Friday when JOHN FAIRFAX announced that Fairfax Community Newspapers would merge with Fairfax's regional newspapers. OK, with them so far. But the publisher later said Fairfax's regional publications included The Newcastle Herald, The Illawarra Mercury, The Warrnambool Standard, the Central Coast Sun Weekly, and - get this - several community newspapers. Fairfax Community Newspapers, it said, consisted of 30 newspapers and magazines throughout NSW and Victoria. What were the "several community" papers doing with the regionals and why weren't they with the community papers. Meanwhile, the latest cost saving exercise failed to fire the sharemarket and Fairfax fell 3c to $3.77 amid comments by analysts such as, "They're just moving chairs around."
