Traumatic experience huh?
My local Aldi has a lift (2 actually) and since I spent some time in SA I carry bags in the car so my experience isn't so traumatic. Money for Trolleys occurs in majors as well across many areas depending on idiot councils.
I remember a bitter fight with one council that resulted in coins being needed for trolleys, only for the decision to be reversed some months later as the local ferals were hassling shoppers demanding to take their trollies back so they could get the $2. The coin in Aldi's case is all about reducing their trolley round up costs and replacement costs.
One interesting observation is that the local Aldi has been upgraded to the bigger fresh model. What I have noticed is that replenishment is not quite right yet and there are out-of stocks early in the day. This tends to indicate that their logistics model is being strained a bit. Will be interesting to see if this improves as unlike Europe, logistics in Aus is over much longer distances and costs more.
