Whilst the volume of lithium batteries in past years has been relatively small the amount of recycling in the EU has not been great. However a number of companies have been developing technology for recycling, such as Umicore. The EU will also insist on the motor manufacturers and new battery plants looking at circular capability as they expand EV production. For example Umicore technology recovers lithium from the batteries in a form that is similar to spodumene which should be able to be recycled into a conversion plant such that EUR is planning.
