AIM is keen to build upon its interests in Burkina Faso, using its familiarity with the geology, government sector and prospecting activity to source new projects.
AIM farmed into the Mumbwa project in Zambia in June 2004, assuming the right to earn 70% of a 5,000 square kilometre prospecting licence from BHP Billiton by spending $US3 million over four years. The main targets are iron oxide copper-gold prospects highlighted by past geochemical, drilling and geophysical work. Broad drill intersections of low grade copper and alteration are interpreted as proximal to Olympic Dam style features. AIM extended the Falcon airborne gravity survey coverage in 2005 and directly selected drill targets from the work in early 2006.
AIM started drilling the first of eleven 500 metre deep holes into the priority Mumbwa targets in May 2006. In August 2006 AIM reported that of the two of the holes completed, one had intersected sulphides and traces of copper minerals within extensive hematite and sericite alteration. Drilling is continuing. BHPB has the right to claw back up to 80% of the project.
In May 2006, AIM was granted a new order prospecting right over the Mokopane nickel-platinum project in the northern limb of the Bushveld complex in South Africa. Mokopane has been incompletely drilled, so that the inferred resource of 40 million tonnes at 0.15% Ni, 0.08% cu, 0.22 g/t Pt and 0.33 g/t Pd is a solid starting point for further exploration. The grant of a new order prospecting right clears the way for resumption of drilling at Mokopane, subject to availability of funds while Perkoa is under development. Nearby large scale projects Potgietersrust (Anglo Platinum) and Platreef (African Minerals) testify to the region’s infrastructure and prospectivity.
