Shorting is when you bet that a stock will fall and so borrow against it etc. Long is when you think the company has great value and potential, and wouldn't mind holding it for a very long time. You could long a stock and get out the moment you think the value has reached by its share price or you find a better opportunity compare to what you've gained so far.
