Chinese company Tianmei Beverage Group seeks Australian food and beverage partners
A CHINESE company that recently listed on the Australian Securities Exchange is seeking partnerships with Australian food and beverage producers to sell their products in China.
Tianmei Beverage Group has contracted shelf space in 941 supermarkets and convenience stores in its home province of Guangdong.
Guangdong — formerly known as Canton — is China’s richest province with a gross domestic product of $1.4 trillion, not far behind Australia’s GDP of $1.8 trillion.
Tianmei Beverage Group has built a business providing bottled spring water under its Tianmei brand name but now wants to offer Australian producers of quality food and beverage products an opportunity to sell into the lucrative Chinese market.
Tianmei listed on the ASX on February 28, raising $10 million to further its business plan.
The company is chaired by former Australian Wool Corporation chairman Tony Sherlock.
Mr Sherlock said Tianmei was looking for goods from Australia to fill shelf space in Chinese shops.
“We see that as a very good and sensible addition to our operating strategy,” he said.
“We have got a business model that is well established and provides for growth on a sustainable basis.
“Having shelf space contracted is the way in which you can be sure you are going to get your product in front of your customers.”
Mr Sherlock said Tianmei was looking for products such as macadamia nuts, packaged snack foods, healthy nut and raisin mixes, dairy and wine products.
Tianmei is already in discussions with Australian Dairy Farms Group and CTD in the Bag — a product and brand development agency.
Mr Sherlock said some problems with getting dairy products into China had been well documented but his company was treading carefully.
“Milk and milk products, such as infant formulas, have a big demand in China and there is recognition that Australian products are clean and well grown, so that is a big plus for us,” he said.
“We are hoping in due course to be a part of that market.”
