Smithy, you are right, but to benefit from the actions of say, OPEC, one would had to have lived and had to have been part of the elite in one of the following countries, under their political regime: Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
To be honest, I can't see how the actions of the OPEC cartel have improved the living standards of the wider population in ANY of those countries. Sure, some people got very wealthy from maintaining the cartel, but the vast majority saw NOTHING out of it.
