morning all,
"Looking at the contents of shopping trolleys of fat people, it's absolutely not surprising: whole cartons of Coke, packets of chips, other fried, pre-cooked food, cakes, sweet biscuits and virtually no fresh fruit, vegetables, lean meat or fish.
There's plenty of nutritional education available so it must be that people simply don't care"
Maybe it's not that people don't care ----------- how about the facts that they are enculturated from a very young age to eat crap.
1. Crap is available in quantity.
2. Crap fills probably 90% of supermarket shelves
3. McDonald's signage is designed for toddlers in back seats of cars - now, that's training at a young age.
4. TV commercials are awash with crap food culture
5. Food science is specifically designed to make and sell processed foods
6. Food advertising in all forms budget wise is a tidal wave compared to a small trickling creek that is nutritional education.
If this were a sport -- the score would be 100 to zero. If this was a war -- it would be won in seconds.
Yes, people are responsible. But, where is the responsibility of suppliers and food designers?
We make laws that say we cannot serve alcohol to people under certain ages - ditto cigarettes.
Why in the name of god are we allowed to erect McDonald's signs SPECIFICALLY designed for kiddies in the back seat of cars to see and pressure mum or dad to stop for Maccas when we have an obesity war on our hands?
Why did we allow complete crap to be sold in tuck shops for years ---------- decades.
Why did we allow Coke to sponsor sports and tuck shops?
You want to know the power of vested interest -------------- look around you.
Why do we allow food labelling to be so dammed untruthful?
Why do we allow NZ products into Australia - with produce of NZ on them -- but the law says those products can come from anywhere on the planet?
Why can you not trace the origin of your vegetables?
Why can you not trace the origin of your meats?
Both the latter in the technological age are a doddle technologically?
What do you think will happen when someone invents a pesticide/hormone/ god knows what personal detector that clips onto your iphone and accurately reads residue ------------- do you think it will come up zero?
Yes, people are irresponsible to a degree --- but if you want degree -- then look to suppliers, processors and retailers.
IMO, government are bloody useless here ------------ it IS people who will change it ---------
residue detectors in iphones.
Social media -------------- someone make a video of little pots of chemicals - put them on a table and ask people to feed it to their kiddies? See what happens.
Then sprinkle those same chemicals into a box of chips and see what happens.
Then advertise those boxes of chips -- tell the kids they are cool.
The first step is to wake up. People as consumers are only part of the problem.
