nightmares link may be some of the answer , plus dry conditions forcing a lot of cattle onto the market - it often drops in lead up to easter and anzac day -historically because of public holidays and short kill weeeks (mayb enot as much at present cause most works werent at capacity, but also because of the turnoff of stock before winter
WITH RESPECT TO NIGHTMARES POST - i read that a few weeks ago and dismissed it bacause of three reasons;
bureaucratic red tape
cost of shipping and freight
a processor (think it was Nolans I saw quoted) putting a scare around
Does anyone have an idea what the costs to get the product to Australia would be; and timeliness i.e. Asia is a lot closer to us than USA is to us with respect to shipping.
I havent read all market reports but is see the figure of near to $2 odd dressed somewhere per lb - which would be $4.40 per kg ... a while ago that would have been near$6 dressed but our dollar stronger now. Even so, it is hard to see that working, even with cheaper processing costs of say 60 to 70 c per k.g.
below i somthing else I found which is interesting, what with aaco running a lot of feedlots ... our cost structure much different with dearer grain, and lately even feeder steers.
INPUTS TOTAL$ $CWT 1 750 # Feeder Steer OKC 150 days ago 1,035.00 138.00 2 Cost of Gain 600 pounds 443.50 0.74 3 Estimated Interest(Prime + 1%) 24.53 4 Resulting Breakeven 1,503.03 111.34 5 Current Texas Panhandle Cash 1,613.66 119.53 6 Net Profit / Loss 110.62 8.19
this table illustrates also that a 620 kg grain fed steer is worth around $2100 Au - which equates to about $6 dressed which confirms my figures above arent too far out which were gained from another market report- current grid here for grainfed steer that size is only $5.30dressed by the look of it
So I am saying the freight would want to be bloody cheap ; as u have the processing cost difference in our cheaper price already!!
(this doesnt rule out it occurring for sake of getting rid of unwanted cuts over there ; temporary surpluses or to disrupt the market here a little or whatever)
