    there was no church, this was 80 or 90 a.d. in the Roman Empire. They had bookshops in France. Romans were publishing histories and poetry right left and centre, all copied by hand. They had invented concrete, and were building spans with the stuff that couldn’t be replicated until the 20th century. No plywood I beams for them! No sireeeee! They would certainly have had the nouse to produce a simple block from wood, or metal, and hand replicated pages of print. It just never occurred to them.
