Gold major AngloGold Ashanti said on Friday that its fourth-quarter output had decreased to about 1,37-million ounces, from 1,43-million ounces in the third quarter, with South African operations producing some 55 000 oz less gold during the three-month period.
AngloGold Ashanti's share price took a beating on the news, falling by almost 6% to a daily low of R316,00 a share. By 13:40, shares were trading at R317,00 a share.
This lower production in South Africa was attributed to a number of planned and unplanned shutdowns that were mainly a result of safety interventions.
The gold miner also experienced a drop in production at its Geita mine, in Tanzania, with production for the fourth quarter 51 000 oz below the previous quarter.
It explained that tonnage was adversely affected by discharge pump failures at both mills and the treatment of harder ore.
