hergerr, the company certify the accounts, the auditors merely give an opinion as to whether the accounts comply with the Corporations Act, accounting standards, etc.
Anyone that takes the auditors opinion on the published accounts as financial advice to buy a stock has rocks in their head.
Re auditors carrying the can, this happened to some extent with Enron, where the auditors were successfully sued.
