As with the renewable energy industry, this is a market created from nothing and will, if they continue in the same way, mean the replacement of ever car in the world (1.2 billion vehicles) much of it with the aid of taxpayer dollars
So any manufacturer would be crazy not to be involved up to the hilt.
It does not matter if the public get an inferior product or usage --- follow the money, it's all new business, business that never existed before
