Roads a priority in $30bn plan for NSW

By state political reporter Sarah Gerathy, staff

Premier Barry O'Farrell has committed funds to two of 70 projects outlined in Infrastructure New South Wales' 20-year vision for the state.

In its long-awaited report, the advisory body is recommending that dozens of projects be considered, with an estimated price tag of $30 billion.

But it says the Government's highest priority should be building the $10 billion WestConnex Motorway, which includes extending the M4 to Sydney Airport and duplicating the M5 East.

Mr O'Farrell says cabinet has approved $1.8 billion for the 33km road.

"We were elected on the basis to committing to one of the motorway projects in Sydney before the next election," he said.

"We're going to get on with that, and that clearly is WestConnex."

Mr O'Farrell says Cabinet has also committed to the Bridges for the Bush program for 17 regional bridges over the next five years.

The Premier says he will give a more detailed response to the rest of the report by the end of the year.

    Transport investment needed: Abbott

    From: AAP

TRAFFIC chaos in Melbourne caused by the shutdown of two city tunnels shows investment in transport infrastructure is needed, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.

Mr Abbott says the coalition's full fiscal position will be publicly available well before the next election and it will reveal a focus on infrastructure spending.

"One of the things the Australian public will see from us, which they haven't seen from this government, is a commitment to the kind of infrastructure which is really going to make a difference," Mr Abbott told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday.

"We've got traffic chaos in Melbourne today because of problems with some of the tunnels.

"This just emphasises the need to get cracking with the transport projects that Melbourne so desperately needs."

Mr Abbott said the most obvious project is the East West Link, to which the coalition has pledged $1.5 billion in funding should it win government.

"We are confident with $1.5 billion from the Commonwealth the work can be underway within 18 months of a new government in Canberra at the latest," he said.
