This is the latest in a series of iron ore announcements in the Eyre Peninsula with a number of companies involved looking at Port Lincoln and Whyalla. LML could only economically use Port Lincoln, whilst magnetite could be slurried to Whyalla, haemetite can't. Corres on other threads (refer Centrex CXM) has addressed the issues in Port Lincoln, one ore facility will be difficult but it is hard to see two getting up. OneSteel cannot use their own ore wharf without barges and the ore jetty is not young.
it would appear that a new ore jetty at Port Bonython is the only option, this would be shared by a number of companies to cover the cost of a long jetty into deep enough water. This area is in the City of Whyalla and backs on to the army training range. The many shack owners around Fitzgerald Bay will not be happy but they already coexist with a petrochemical facility. A rail link to the standard gauge Port Augusta to Whyalla railway is feasible, the Eyre Peninsula railways are narrow gauge but are not linked to the OneSteel narrow gauge ore lines.
There are interesting logistical challenges ahead for all players.
I hold no Eyre Peninsula shares, this is for general info
