That was interesting - the old guy called it.
As I spend my time rummaging through the garbage heap of capitalism for forgotten gems I don't see this as an isolated incident.
It's a function of the idea of corporate governance being totally retarded.
    1. Our paid managers don't put their own skin in the game. Their returns come from salaries and options.
    2. Rather than questioning them our society worships the ground beneath their feet.
    3. There is a constant expectation of growth. To earn their big bucks shareholders expect it of them to take risks with your money.
    4. The success that Buckley had went to his head and you can see the aquisitions getting bigger. With hindsight it's easy next time I will be able to spot it better.
Consider a flat economy, how can we expect companies to only grow? It's an unrealistic expectation from shareholders which drives it.
Could Buckley have said "16% CAGR" but not any more as the opportunities aren't there. Or did he have to double down.
Surely like the Jeff Skilling at Enron he knew what would happen.
Your story of Cardno is of great interest but it has to be seen in the context of Santos, Arrium, Slater and Gordon.
Buckley saw that treating his people well was essential and it seems like he never wielded the knife.
Crescent are the opposite, I just hope they finish soon to preserve the business.
