Canterbury Basin has a proven petroleum system, large mapped structures and a significant subeconomic
discovery, yet the region remains very lightly explored.
Onshore wells drilled to date have been dry, including the recent Arcadia-1 (TD 1479 m) and Ealing-1 (TD 1696m)wells. The four offshore wells drilled during the 1970s and 1980s,
Endeavour-1 (TD 2741 m), Resolution-1 (TD 1963 m), Clipper-1 (TD 4742 m),Galleon-1 (TD 3086 m) are more indicative of the basin’s potential.
Both Galleon-1 and Clipper-1 contained significant hydrocarbon shows in Late Cretaceous coal measure sands. Galleon-1 flowed gas at 10 mmscf/d with 2300 bbls/d
condensate, but was plugged and abandoned as the calculated
recoverable reserve was considered uneconomic. Galleon-1 is the best example of a number of wells drilled in New Zealand during the late 1970s to mid 1980s that were at the time deemed non-commercial.
The third play is associated with faults and anticlines
that have grown during Miocene to Recent time. Primary reservoir targets are Late Cretaceous or Eocene sandstones, with secondary targets of Oligocene limestones. The offshore Endeavour-1 well explored a
structure of about 30 sq km in mapped area and most onshore
prospects are also of this type.
Endeavour-1 was drilled as a wildcat well, situated on the crest of a NE-SW trending anticlinal feature 16 km southeast of Omaru in the Canterbury Basin. Hydrocarbon shows were registered in fractured, fine grained early Cretaceous marine sandstones. Massive sandstone sequences were encountered over the interval 2090-2515 m with average porosities of 8% (but up to 15%). Notable were two thin sandstones with porosities of up to 20%. Cores were cut. The well was plugged and abandoned after wire-line logs indicated that formations identified during drilling
for testing were too tight.
Drilling data: Water depth 39 m. Spud date 24 October 1970, TD 2741 m 20 November 1970. 29 1/2”, 16”, & 9 5/8” casing strings were run. Rotating time for drilling was 309 hours, average ROP 8.87 m/hour for the well.
