If there is a guy that has a history of tracking down unclaimed piles of cash in bushland, and he tells others about it once he has filled his bag, that's a good community service, right?

Very occasionally the money turns out to be counterfeit, but its up to the people that have made money in the past finding genuine piles of cash to figure that out.

As long as the person broadcasting these unclaimed piles of cash is under the impression at the time of broadcast that the cash is genuine, he is a good guy.

He may not always have the time or inclination to find out for sure, but generally he has a good nose for legitimate cash.

That's why people instantly take what he has t say seriously, and pay attention.

Conversely if there is a guy that has a history of claiming to have found unclaimed piles of cash in bushland, and more often that not the cash turns out to be counterfeit, that guy will soon lose the attention of potential cash finders, and fewer and fewer people will bother turning up to find out for themselves.
