Let's be honest, our outrage is very very selective. Most times this is done by the headlines in the media/social media who choose to guide their readers opinions like pied pipers. Distance is not an issue here. For example, the continuing atrocities in West Papua go largely unreported. Why? Waleed or Getup s not going to say anything about this. Until 1975 PNG was part of Australia. NZ was part of NSW 150 years ago. For one we do not wan to upset Indonesia who happens to be a muslim country and they have 10 times more people than us. And then, there is the racial/class issue. The Kiwis are more like us than the PNGrs. So unfortunately, when it comes to valuing human life, nobody will say it, but some lives are worth more than others. I personally witnessed this in Africa and in other places.
