I understand what your angle is here, but setting aside that it's always been a case of local, state, national in terms of where the resources go. International always had few resources and they were assigned to places like the US and UK/Europe and most of those have been severely downgraded because of budget cuts. I doubt there would be an Australian media organisation with a corespondent in Africa or South America, so the interest diminishes even further. They can't afford it and there's little interest from the audience.
As far as Christchurch, the shooter is Australian so to the media here that equals massive story and it's in our closest neighbour who Australia shares pretty much open borders with.
