I've spent a lot of time in South America. I think the genie is out of the bottle for military dictatorships. Yes they were de rigeur all over Latin America in the 1950s to 1970s, but I honestly don't think that after having tasted democracy that the people will allow that to happen again. Yes things might get ugly, yes there is corruption and protest and disruption, but I don't think there will be a military dictatorship in Brazil ever again. I definitely think the article is right in suggesting that a more authoritarian government is possible and that they may try and influence elections to hold onto power in the future.
