Victoria’s premier has posted pictures on social media of the state’s new medicinal cannabis crop.

Daniel Andrews on Friday said the crop was planted in April and will be ready for harvest in two months.

“In 2017, we’ll make this life-saving treatment available to the sick kids who need it most,” Andrews wrote in the post.

The access to medicinal cannabis bill was passed by the Victorian parliament in 2015. It created a legal framework to enable the manufacture, supply and access to safe and high-quality medicinal cannabis products in Victoria.

It followed months of campaigning by Victorian families who had been pushing for the drug to be used medically, saying it had successfully treated their chronically ill children when other medicines had not.

Children with severe epilepsy are expected to be given first access to it from next year.
