Bigger wheat crop predicted
Thursday, 14/07/2005
Australian Wheat Forecasters has boosted its prediction for this year's crop to 23.8 million tonnes, up from 23 million tonnes last month.
Additional rain in the eastern states has seen farmers sowing at every opportunity and most states are likely to get a good crop in a year that started with gloomy prospects.
In parts of New South Wales it has been too much of a good thing, with recent soaking rains keeping tractors out of the paddock.
Forecaster Brian Bailey says June rains are the reason for the better national forecast.
"In our 23 million tonnes last month we had built into that average June rainfall and I think actually we got more than June rainfall, certainly in the eastern states," he said.
"Farmers are a tough lot, but there are a few of them known to give a quiet smirk and say something like it's the best, after being late of course, now saying it's probably one of our best openings for 10 years."
