We had discussed this before, but the significance more so now than before This is one definition below ------------------------------------------------------------- 1/Retail banking is a banking service that is geared primarily toward individual consumers.
2/ Retail banking is usually made available by commercial banks, as well as smaller community banks.
[[[[[[[[[[ Unlike wholesale banking,]]]]
3/ retail banking focuses strictly on consumer markets.
4/ Retail banking entities provide a wide range of personal banking services, including offering savings and checking accounts, bill paying services, as well as debit and credit cards. Through retail banking, consumers may also obtain mortgages and personal loans. Although retail banking is, for the most part, mass-market driven, many retail banking products may also extend to small and medium sized businesses. Today much of retail banking is streamlined electronically via Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), or through virtual retail banking known as online banking.
WHOLESALE BANKING
Wholesale banking can mean two different things. Sometimes wholesale banking is the provision of services by banks to other financial institutions. Usually, however, wholesale banking also includes banking services offered to corporations and other large institutions, financial or otherwise. In this sense, wholesale banking comprises cash management services, foreign exchange, business-to-business payments, trust services, custodial services, commercial lending, and trade finance.
Wholesale banking compares with retail banking, which is the provision of banking services to individuals. Large financial institutions, such as Citigroup, commonly engage in both wholesale banking and retail banking. Wholesale banking in the US has traditionally excluded investment banking services such as stock offerings. However, the unraveling of Glass-Steagall restrictions, and the consequent mergers of commercial and investment banks, have made the line between wholesale banking and investment banking less finely drawn.
