There isn't "a hundred or so computers actively trading the same stock"
There are only a few (companies - banks - brokers) who can afford the ($millions) software.....and the $100k application fee + $100k "ASX access fee" annual fee.

But they attack hundreds of companies each day with hundreds of computers.
e.g., there are "down" bots and "up" bots (my terminology) and often you can see them fighting for control over a stock where one bank might be trying to walk the price up and another bank is trying to walk it down.
