VIRGIN BLUE and Air New Zealand have been in talks for several months about forming an alliance for the highly competitive trans-Tasman market.
Air New Zealand confirmed the talks with Virgin Blue today, but said the airlines had not yet reached an agreement. Representatives of the carriers said they would advise the market if one was concluded.
Qantas attempted to buy up to 25 per cent of Air NZ in 2002 but fell foul of the competition regulator.
It is understood the ongoing talks do not involve equity but closer co-operation between the carriers.
