Kampala ARRANGEMENTS to drill a second oil well at Avivi-1 in Arua district received a major boost over the weekend as parts of the long-awaited rig started moving in.

The first fleet of heavy-load trucks made its way through the town on Saturday, triggering excitement among residents.

More semi-trailer loads of massive equipment arrived on Sunday.

Neptune Petroleum Uganda, the firm licensed to explore oil in Exploration Area 5, reported last week that the operations at Avivi-1 would be delayed for a couple of weeks due to a catch in getting a rig.

The delay setback the initial plans by about two weeks.

Peter Kingston, the Neptune executive chairman said the rig they expected had finished drilling Tullow's successful well at Kasamene-2, but there were operational delays in the completion of the well.

The rig is owned by Oil & Gas Exploration Company Cracow (OGEC).

With the new development, officials from Neptune said Avivi-1 would be spudded as soon as the rig is assembled.

Residents have been waiting keenly ever since the first well, Iti-1, was drilled and abandoned in June last year for lack of commercially viable hydrocarbons.
