+++++++++++++++++++++++++ Intellect (ASX: IHG) today announced a $1.3 million deal in the US, the first in what is expected to be strong sales for its latest generation of outdoor payment terminals in the American market.
The deal with ThruComm Inc, in conjunction with US processor Paymentech is for Intellect's new OPT2027, designed specifically to take payments in harsh environments. ThruComm will be installing the terminals in drive-through restaurants, allowing customers to pay by credit, debit, stored value, gift or loyalty card at the pick up window in a manner that is as fast as cash. Alternatively, customers can pay with credit card at the order point, leaving the service window purely for food delivery and speeding up the entire process.
Highly vandal-resistant, secure and weatherproof, the new Intellect terminal can be mounted flush to a wall or on its own stand, making it ideal for a number of applications. Around the world, Intellect OPT terminals are used in a variety of places - petrol stations, drive-through restaurants and even car parks. Intellect has over 25 years experience in the outdoor payment market - initially providing the unattended terminals for petrol stations in Europe.
Intellect's CEO, Mr Jan de Smet said: "The OPT2027 is the new flagship of our outdoor terminal range. All of our experience has created a great looking, fully functional terminal that is perfect for many merchants around the world. We are exceptionally pleased that our experience and expertise are valued by customers such as ThruComm."
ThruComm's Senior Vice President of Business Alliance Development, Mr James Stroud, said: "One of the greatest challenges for quick service restaurants that want their customers to have the convenience of plastic payments is achieving 'faster than cash' credit and debit card payments at drive-throughs.
"ThruComm's unique managed network connectivity services and expert point of sale integration capabilities will enable Intellect's drive-through terminals to achieve a new level of performance with 3-5 second transaction times and 99.9% uptime reliability."
Much of Intellect's strategy is based on taking payments wherever the customers are - a concept very much appreciated in the US. The success of this strategy is reflected in many of Intellect's recent sales to companies that wish to offer their customers maximum payment convenience.
For example, in early April 2002 the company announced a $1.4 million deal with AMPS Wireless in the US for delivery of Intellect's Sapphire mobile payment terminals. The Sapphire is used by couriers, retail food delivery, taxicabs and even local law enforcement authorities for taking on-the-spot payments.
In November 2001 Intellect announced that it had become the leading supplier of Datatac wireless payment terminals in the US with the announcement of a contract worth $1.4 million from Linkpoint. The Intellect Datatac systems, which communicate like a mobile phone, are being used in a variety of situations where payment terminals need to be portable and flexible. These include solutions for the sale of food and merchandise in sporting stadiums and exhibition centres as well as on-the-spot payment for services such as limousines and tradesmen.
