I know from railfan sources that CXG provided 4 remanufactured ALCo locos ex Hammersley Iron scrapyard that were used as construction locos on their line. They were then mothballed in the Pilbara. So far as I know they are still there though they may be occasionally used for maintainance. CXG hold 2 other ex Hammersley locos for remanufacture but as far as I know there has been no action on them.
I doubt that they would want them as they bought 15 new locos from UGL and GE. They are more than sufficient for their operations.
The pics you saw may be old ones of the original group under remanufacture.
