Grant goes a long way around here SARAH DEAN 27/05/2009 12:00:00 AM URANA is one of three NSW local government areas where the first-home buyers grant itself would be enough for a deposit on a house. But the town’s low employment rate and location 110km from both Albury and Wagga seem to be keeping buyers away.
Urana’s J.M. Smith and Co. real estate manager Denis Smith said the cheapest house on his books was $97,500.
“The $14,000 government grant would provide a conservative deposit on some of the houses around our town,” he said.
Other NSW areas where the grant would cover a deposit include Jerilderie 30 kms from Coalworks proposed mine in Oaklands ,Brewarrina, 100km east of Bourke in outback NSW, and Central Darling.
Mr Smith said more than 200 jobs were expected to become available when the proposed coal mines go ahead in Oaklands.
