Investors looking to ride the wave of China's boom, without having to throw everything into resources stocks - look no further. Whether it be hangover cures, property or cookie ovens, there's a wide variety of Australian companies making the most of the roaring Chinese dragon. The Sunday Telegraph has uncovered six companies that may be on the cusp of greatness, including blue chip stocks you've probably not considered as having Chinese exposure.
Each company has its own footprint to take advantage of China's massive population or its surging economy. Austrade economist Tim Harcourt said China has long been attractive to Australia's biggest resources companies - BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Woodside Petroleum - because of double-digit economic growth for almost 20 years. But he says there's growing evidence that many small and medium enterprises are jetting to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, as well as second and third-tier cities like Kunming, Chengdu, Qiangdao and Chongqing, to take advantage of the economic expansion of China. "People used to call Chengdu a nice country town, but now there's eight million people living there," he said. "Australian companies have had a lot of success in bigger cities, but the smaller cities are really becoming attractive." Austrade says more than 4250 Australian businesses export to China and around 3000 Australian companies have bases in China. Here's a taste of how and where you can buy shares that will expose you to China's diversity.
Rockeby Biomed Ltd (ASX: RBY) AUSTRALIAN-listed, Singaporebased Rockeby is counting on a boom in Chinese drinkers, as it establishes a hangover cure product, known as Pepp. This could be seen as a long shot, but there's diversity in a chicken virus influenza, likely to be sought across Asia. Pepp is an enzyme-based health supplement which, according to Rockeby, has been "clinically proven" to reduce alcohol levels by "more than 50 per cent within 40 minutes". "Moreover, it may reduce hangover and eliminate bad breath," it said. Rockeby claims a prospective target group of more than 100 million daily drinkers in China. "We are expediting the global rollout of Pepp and China - with its huge population and lifestyle - is a primary target," said Rockeby boss, Dr Sze-Wee Tan. On a more mainstream note, Rockeby is close to securing a partnership deal with a Chinese stateowned company to sell avian influenza virus test kits, such is the concern in China about the deadly disease.
