Just to close my end off also.

I have 3 children in high school, so I remain interested in the education system personally, although I will not work in the industry (in Qld anyway). From this point of view, I was deeply shocked and disappointed by my encounter with the education system.

Also, my experience is restricted to the Queensland system, perhaps Victoria is better organised (luckier?). (Aside: Why is there a different system in each state anyway??)

My intention was serious in taking the Grad Dip Ed, but the bureaucracy I found was not compatible with my own values of high quality education, which requires students to take some responsibility as well, and for teachers to encourage (all) students to achieve the greatest heights they can (including pushing the high achievers to ever greater heights).

I found the Qld system to be hypocritical, rule-bound, and primarily interested in promoting benefits for existing teachers, rather than focusing on the education of children. When the system does think about the children, it's just about getting all of them over the line in terms of national benchmarks. The attention is focused on the poor students, while capable students are left alone, because they have already reached the required standards of mediocrity.

It almost makes me want to send my kids overseas to finish school.

If you do discuss health care next, count me out. That's just too complicated for me.
