Float - they are still very interesting books and influenced me a lot, even though I have never done drugs - but there is so much in those books about man (and woman, just because we have the letters 'wo' in fronts does not divorce us from the experiences and insights of men) that whatever the reality of the books was, he studied his subject closely and brought an uncanny sense of reality as well as other-worldliness to the happenings. Carlos Castaneda is/was a South American (Peruvian) with some Indian blood and, it seems has written many more books, which I haven't read. But check out the reviews on Amazon.com just search for 'Castaneda' I don't remember about the recapitulation process, must find the books again, but I am pretty certain he was the student who possibly went on a sight-seeing trip and being interested in pharmaceuticals etc. as was the fashion in the 60s he went to study or perhaps just parlay with this old Indian brujo - and hey presto, a wonderful book. I found some of the experiences, like flying and soaring etc. a bit far-fetched - but possibly dream-like happenings; yet the conversations are fascinating, almost like Plato's 'Dialogue' with Socrates.
