I just visited NZ, and while in Queenstown I dropped into iFly. I visited the facility because I had taken an interest in IDZ after the SP crash of late. What I saw when I entered the facility was quite a shock - not a single customer in the facility at 3pm on a Friday afternoon! There was also only one staff member inside - the rest (3 of them) were outside with a shoddy makeshift game to try coax customers into the premises. They had two helmets on a table and an icream tub with a hole in it - if you threw a tennis ball and got it into the ice cream container you got a free flight, and if you got it into the helmets you got 50% off. The thing was, they were pretty much giving away the 50% discounts and still not a single customer inside... The whole thing wreaked of desperation. Meanwhile pretty much every other adventure business in Queenstown was printing money, with queues for a lot of them. I really thought that iFly was an activity people would love, but it seems that they would rather jump out of a plane for the real experience. Anyway, after this visit I won’t even consider putting money into these guys as I believe their days are numbered... If you can’t make money in Queenstown - you’ve got major issues.
