Believe me, we were watching all around us, front, back and to the sides. We were checking out every rustling sound anywhere near us. The 4wd was right next to us and we were ready to jump in but I'll never fish there at night again. We've caught heaps of much bigger Barra on a subsequent trip during the day and off a shallow rocky bank. Much safer, stress free, no mozzies and great shore based Barra fishing up to 1m in length (just over 25 pounds in the old language). And much less chance of shite-ing our pants!
I didn't tell you what one crazy local did at that causeway.
The reason we crossed that causeway was that I had talked to that local during the day while fishing the saltwater side of the causeway. He said if I wanted to increase my chances to catch a Barra in the middle of the dry season, to come back that night and meet him across the other side of the causeway. We got there first, crossed the causeway as explained earlier, slowly and waiting for crocs to clear our path one by one.
We waited for him and he arrived 10 minutes later but parked on the other side. I thought I must have misunderstood but he grabbed his gear and walked toward the causeway. I was confused at what he was doing but then he started walking onto the causeway towards the crocs eek.png. Unbelievably as he approached each croc, it got out of his way and as he moved forward, it moved back in behind him to lay where it had been laying. By the time he got half way across the causeway, he was surrounded by crocs as we had been in the car. He kept going and got to the other side. I was absolutely in awe and thought he had a death wish. I asked him why he didn't just cross in his car. He said that's the way he's always done it. He said the crocs never attack on land if they know you can see them. That's not something I'm ever willing to test out for myself! I still think he was mad. I'm also wondering if he's still alive!
