Deebing Creek , Qld. is currently in the news as a developer who has bought what was an old aboriginal mission land plans to develop the area as a housing estate.
I had never heard of Deebing Creek , until recently when searching Ancestry we became aware of the aboriginal link to our family roots back in the 1800's when a couple of "white fellas" in the family's country origins married a couple of aboriginal girls . To cut a long story short , some ancestors were taken to an aboriginal mission at Deebing Creek near Ipswich. I am led to believe that is also where they past away and may have been buried. We have no detail as how they died .
There are also stories of an aboriginal massacre at Deebing Creek mission but I for one have no information on this.
I find it disturbing that once again the news reports protests by people claiming that this land is an aboriginal sacred site , end of comment . At no point do the media seem to follow up on what the history of Deebing Creek actually is ? it is almost passed off as "another aboriginal land protest ".
This is another very sad indightment of our society where the respect and sensitivities of our aboriginal ancestors is just trampled literally by "white fella" greed . There are no doubt many aboriginal peoples graves on this old mission site and to disrespect this fact from what was also a stolen generation is disturbing.
I am sure if a surburban development was planned for Toowong cemetary in Brisbane (for example) there would be a local , state and national outcry.
So what is the difference ?
