I can see why they did that as well, because if they made Smith Captain they would put a Target on his back

A running outside Player needs to be as un-tagged as possible, so its a strategic move.

Defenders like Stratton arnt going to be tagged, so its a good choice.

Plus he has had some best afield games without even 1 brownlow vote ever.
