Exactly what I have been thinking for some long time now - they can't go beyond 0.7% concentration without suffering increased precipitation of lithium so they don't always want increased area in this part of the process, but increased depth is an obvious defence against dilution and greater buffer between the variable part of the process (weather) and the steady state process.
