The ban is explicitly "coking coal" used for steel production, not thermal coal used for energy. Australian coking coal is some of the best in the world, resulting in less wasted steel. I agree is likely politically motivated. IMO possibly retaliation for banning Huawei 5G tech. Likely to be rescinded if the aus government backs down on that and compromises our digital security.
