I agree with you esh, on the fall of empires.
Unfortunately though, throughout human history, empires have never fallen peacefully, they go down destructively fighting to the last straw, and this one will be no different.
The fall of empires is always accompanied by war, it's just plain dumb human nature, because after all is said and done, we actually haven't advanced very far as a species yet. We are still ruled by animal instincts.
And too many new empires grow from ashes and conquest, rather than from peace and discovery.
The looming flash point this year, and over the next few years, is Taiwan.
Once again last week, the Chinese leadership reaffirmed their intention to bring Taiwan back into China, and explicitly stated (again) "... even if that involved invasion and military force". There you have it. It's just a matter of time.
The USA also knows it. Because the USA secretary of state said in a speech back in 2016 that if the USA forces need to spill blood in the Asian region (aka Taiwan), then he expects Australian forces to be standing side-by-side with them in a bloody conflict.
Talk about history repeating itself. Hitler's aim before WWII was to re-establish the greater German Reich, by invading the parts of Europe where German nationals principally resided, which included those parts of Poland and Austria and Czechoslovakia and other areas lost in the settlement of WWI.
China is now doing the same, and actually using exactly the same language, having moved into the islands in the China Sea, and invaded Tibet, and currently in disputes with a number of countries on it's southern borders, including India. The Chinese leader explicitly stated it is their intention to re-unify the greater Chinese population. There you go, almost identical language to Hitler.
There can only be one (1) outcome from this, and it's not a good one.
God help us all, if the battle for Taiwan is not contained, like a Vietnam or Korean conflict was. And like Vietnam, I don't believe the USA can win for Taiwan, it's too far away, just like the Russians were never allowed to invade Cuba, it's too far away. Empires weaken and fall when they extend themselves too far.
And back to Resolute, well I keep an eye on it, and anything under $1 seems like good buying to me. It's not a small cap, but a rising gold price should deliver it rewards in share price. I also think they might be on the lookout for further acquisitions.
